MOGODITSHANE - Vice President Seretse Khama Ian Khama has stressed the importance of politicians' responsibility to cater for the needs of their constituencies by promoting peace and development. He said this at the launch of the new Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) candidate for Mogoditshane, Patrick Masimolole.

Khama expressed his gratitude to outgoing area MP George Kgoroba and asked him not to forsake the constituency, as he has been more like a parent to the residents of Mogoditshane.

He advised other politicians not to be self-seeking but to learn from the likes of Kgoroba who is stepping down to make way for change.

Khama referred to Mogoditshane as a town and not a village because of its developments that include a shopping mall, army camp and two BFA Super League football teams, Mogoditshane Fighters and BDF XI.

It was not all work and no play as there was much laughter when Khama referred to himself in the second person and pointed to his picture on a BDP poster, saying some people often referred to him as "a dictator used to giving orders".

He said at times he felt that people feared him because he is an ex-soldier and as such they think he always carries a gun.

Kgoroba encouraged people to vote for Masimolole in large numbers, saying "the ruling party had done a lot" for their betterment.

Although crime was hampering development throughout the constituency, Kgoroba commended the police for their efforts in curbing the problem.

He also expressed confidence that the problem of water shortages in the area would become a thing of the past.

He said BDP was the only party that encouraged the youth to join it and gave them positions of responsibility. Twenty-eight new BDP youth members, who were said to be defectors from opposition parties, were welcomed during the launch.

The BDP candidate Masimolole pledged not to disappoint the people of Mogoditshane if elected.
